Break In Thwarted At Post office

Kedington News Post Office A night of disturbance by youths on the Westward Deals estate on Saturday night culminated with the attempted burglary of Post Office Kedington Newsagents.

Residents woke on Sunday morning to find front greens strewn with various rubbish including takeaway cartons and Fosters beer cans and the front of the butchers streaked with a substance that although currently unidentified probably has a sweet and sour flavour.

Some Residents became aware of trouble during the night, one resident complaining of noise during the evening behind her house saying that she could see about 9 teenagers none of whom she recognised and had been keeping an eye on them saying that she was ready to call the Police if they caused any trouble.

Police were finally called just after midnight by Matthew Upton of Kedington Newsagents (Who is also the author of this article and faced with the terrible prospect of having to write about himself in the third person) Who was woken a few minutes earlier by a noise which later transpired to be the breaking of the lock on the back door of the shop. Having looked out of his bedroom window he saw around six or seven youths in their mid-teens creeping in a drunkenly exaggerated "Ninja" style from the garage cul-de-sac opposite. None were known to Mr Upton who is quite certain that most of them were not from Kedington. The would be comical sight was made less comical be their apparent aim of the shop's back door. Moving to another window with a better view Mr Upton saw two of the group enter the back of the shop's rear. At this point he shouted to his partner to call the police and went to confront the intruders. His shout to call the police alerted the intruders to his presence and by the time he had got down stairs they had fled leaving no clue to their direction of travel. Fortunately nothing was taken. Mr Upton puts this down either to lack of time or the absence of alcohol in the area they broke in to (since the Newsagents does not sell alcohol). The Lock of the door was badly damaged where as the rest of the door was still in good condition indicating the possibility of at least one of the group being experienced in such break ins (or a lucky shot). The only distinguishing feature of the group was that two of them were wearing small "Pork Pie" hats.

Police are investigating and any information you have about the incident should be passed either to Kedington News or PC Andrew Green (1484) at Haverhill police station on 01473 613500.
