The Last Meadowlark Parade

No More Meadowlark Parades

At its Meadowlark meeting last Monday Kedington Community Association decided to no longer organise a street parade to mark the opening of it's annual Meadowlark event.

The parade, which has been a much looked forward to part of the Meadowlark festivities for many years, makes it's way around a large part of the village and comprises most of the groups in the village as well as several independent costumed individuals. However recent changes in legislation means that The Police will no longer stop the traffic as it proceeds around the village and the measures that are needed to comply with the legislation and the cost of having a parade could have swallowed half of the income generated by the whole of the Meadowlark week. This was considered too high a cost by the KCA.

No More Meadowlark Parades

Steve Brown of the KCA said "We are not alone in making this decision. We have heard of other communities which have been forced to drop their parade or procession because of the high cost. The Committee had a very difficult decision to make as we know the parade is enjoyed by everyone and most groups in the village would take part and it was something we could all be proud of. Sadly, we have to comply with the rules and this will cost - potentially reducing the amount we raise over the whole week by half. KCA relies on the money raised by Meadowlark to exist and can not risk the expense involved."

The Committee is keen to point out that the rest of the Meadowlark festivities will continue and that it is already in the process of lining up variety of acts and activities to create all the normal carnival atmosphere including some events that will be new to Meadowlark this year. Also the committee is exploring the possibly an off road Pageant with Miss Meadowlark still taking the lead in proceedings.

Meadowlark week will run from the 3rd to the 12th June this year and a full weeks programme is being finalised.
